Your Blueprint for the Google Map Pack
Ranking in the top 3 spots on Google Maps (the "Map Pack") is the holy grail for local contractors. It drives the highest quality, highest intent phone calls of any marketing channel. Here is the definitive checklist to get your profile optimized.
Phase 1: The Core Setup
- Exact Business Name: Use your real, legally registered business name. Do not stuff keywords (e.g., use "Bob's Plumbing", not "Bob's Plumbing & Drain Cleaning Atlanta"). Google is cracking down on keyword stuffing with immediate profile suspensions.
- Accurate Categories: Choose the most accurate primary category, as this carries the most ranking weight. Add relevant secondary categories (e.g., Primary: Plumber, Secondary: Drainage Service, Water Heater Installation).
- Complete Address & Service Area: If you have a physical storefront where customers visit, list the address. If you are a Service Area Business (SAB) that travels to customers, hide your address and set your service areas accurately by city and zip code (up to 20 areas).
Phase 2: Building Trust & Authority
- High-Quality Photos: Upload real photos of your branded trucks, your team on the job, and before/after shots. Google's Vision AI analyzes images and can recognize stock photos—do not use them.
- Detailed Services Section: Fill out the services section comprehensively. Add 100-300 word descriptions for every service you offer, and include starting prices if applicable. This helps Google associate your profile with long-tail keyword searches.
- Consistent Review Velocity: Aim for a steady stream of reviews rather than a massive dump all at once. Reply to EVERY review, good or bad, using keywords naturally in your response (e.g., "Thanks John! We enjoyed working on your kitchen remodel in downtown Chicago.").
Phase 3: Ongoing Maintenance
- Google Posts: Treat your GBP like a mini social media profile. Post updates, special offers, or highlights of recent projects at least once a week. This shows Google your business is active and engaged.
- Q&A Section: Don't wait for customers to ask questions. Seed your own Q&A section with the most common questions customers ask you (e.g., "Do you offer free estimates?", "Are you licensed and insured?"). Answer them thoroughly.
