The Magic Number of Reviews
Contractors constantly ask: "How many reviews do I need to rank #1 on Google Maps?" The truth is, it's not just about hitting an arbitrary total count like 100 or 500.
Google's algorithm looks at reviews through several different lenses. Here is how to actually win the review game.
1. Beat Your Local Competitors
The baseline rule is simple: you need more reviews than the businesses currently ranking in the top 3 of the Map Pack in your specific area. If the top three plumbers in your town have 45, 60, and 85 reviews, your immediate goal should be 100. Look at your local market to set your benchmark.
2. Recency Matters More Than Volume
A company with 500 reviews from three years ago will frequently be outranked by a company with 50 reviews that are consistently coming in every single week. Google wants to see that your business is currently active and pleasing customers right now. A review older than 3 months carries significantly less ranking weight.
3. The Power of Keywords in Reviews
Not all 5-star reviews are created equal. If a customer writes, "Great guys, five stars," that's nice. But if a customer writes, "Bob did a great job on our roof replacement in Springfield," that acts as a massive SEO ranking signal.
When asking for reviews, guide your customers. Say: "It would really help us out if you mentioned the specific service we provided and what city you live in!"
4. Responding is Non-Negotiable
Responding to reviews shows Google (and future customers reading your profile) that you care about customer service. It's also a free opportunity to naturally insert keywords into your response.
Pro Tip: Don't just respond to the good ones. How you handle a 1-star review tells a potential customer everything they need to know about your integrity. Respond calmly, professionally, and offer to make it right offline.
