Mastering the Map Pack
For local service businesses, the Google Map Pack (the three map listings at the top of search results) is prime real estate. It drives more calls than traditional organic links below it. Google determines Map Pack rankings based on three core pillars: Relevance, Distance, and Prominence.
1. Relevance (Are you what they are looking for?)
Google wants to show the most accurate business for the user's search. You build relevance by:
- Selecting the exact right primary and secondary categories in your GBP.
- Having service-specific pages on your website that link back to your GBP.
- Getting customer reviews that mention specific services (e.g., "Great job fixing my water heater").
2. Distance (Proximity to the searcher)
Google heavily weighs the searcher's physical location relative to your business address. You can't change where your office is, but you can expand your footprint by:
- Optimizing your "Service Areas" in your profile.
- Creating highly detailed, location-specific landing pages on your website for the surrounding cities you want to rank in.
3. Prominence (Are you a trusted authority?)
Prominence is how well-known and trusted your business is offline and online. You build prominence by:
- Review Count and Score: Having more high-quality reviews than your competitors.
- Local Citations: Ensuring your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) are listed identically across directories like Yelp, BBB, and local chambers of commerce.
- Backlinks: Getting links to your website from other authoritative local websites (news stations, sponsorships, suppliers).
Ranking in the Map Pack isn't about one magic trick; it's about consistently executing on these three pillars better than your local competitors.
